Description

Homeopathy for Horses: Book Review by Angie Noll

Tineke Verkade, affectionately known as “the cow lady”, has worked tirelessly to promote the use of homeopathy on dairy farms, both prophylactically and as herd treatment.  An increasing number of horse owners are also turning to homeopathy, making her “Homeopathy for Horses” a timely and invaluable resource.

This second edition is an expanded version of the first one, with the Materia Medica entries increasing from 54 to 97, and the list of animal ailments burgeoning from a mere 39 to a massive 129.  The book is logically compiled and can easily be used by people with little or no homeopathic training for the basic care of their horses, starting with a short and concise explanation of what homeopathy is and its basic principles.  Tineke provides basic storage and handling instructions for homeopathic remedies as well as steps to successful prescribing that are straightforward enough to help guide a horse owner to the correct remedy, together with administration guidelines.

The book is easy to follow and provides enough information without being excessive.  The glossary, giving a simple explanation of animal disease jargon, such as ‘coccidiosis’ or ‘hæmaturia’ is especially helpful.

Even though the book doesn’t replace professional homeopathic or veterinary services, as Tineke points out several times throughout the book, it should go a long way toward introducing the horse owner to the wonders of homeopathy.  It’s a book that should be on every horse owner’s shelf.
